the 4 week job search system
four weeks from now, you could be negotiating salary instead of refining your resume for the 100th time.
you've nailed your positioning.
built solid proof of work.
the resume tells your story.
but do you have a system for job search?
no one warns you about this
job search is the most emotionally taxing thing you’ll do, period. your confidence takes a hit. you might feel directionless. why write another personalised email when the last 20 disappeared? why network when you feel like damaged goods? you know you should be doing more. but procrastination becomes protection.
i know the feeling.
monday morning, coffee in hand, twenty tabs open. linkedin here, company careers page there. you apply to three roles before lunch. by wednesday, you're scrolling twitter instead. friday rolls around and you've sent maybe eight applications. next monday, same story.
people tell me
"after so many weeks of 3 4 interviews per week and still getting rejections, i got burned out." another: "getting out of bed at 10 am, watching youtube and netflix, staying in sweatpants all day."
the problem isn't motivation.
it's the lack of a system. you're a high performer who suddenly can't perform this one basic task. and the spiral tightens. less action, more shame, less confidence, less action.
the 4 week system works
because it has an end date. the structure fights the spiral. the tracking keeps you honest. the community keeps you sane.
Pro-tip: if you’re a senior leader change the timline to 3 months.
let’s dive into this system.
week 1: foundation
map your target companies.
build your tracking system.
set up your environment.
most importantly,
establish the 7:30 am rule.
get up.
shower.
put on good clothes.
not sweatpants.
no, i am not your dad.
but this works folks. multiple folks i’ve mentored swear by this. your brain knows the difference between work mode and couch mode.
create your workspace
carve out a dedicated area. even if it's just a corner of your dining table. this is where you job search. nowhere else. your brain needs boundaries.
build your tracker
make a simple spreadsheet. add company, role, date applied, response date, next steps. that's it. don't overcomplicate this.
spend only 1-3 hours daily.
max of 3 hours. the "treat job searching like an 8 hour job" advice is fantasy that leads to burnout. you should spend the rest of the day upskilling or building anything that fuels your mind.
daily blocks:
9:00 to 11:00 am: deep work applications. your brain's fresh. this is when you customize cover letters and tackle those "why us?" questions. set a timer. two hours. done.
2:00 to 3:00 pm:
one new company deep dive daily. read their latest announcements. check their engineering blog. know their stack. this is a good time to get into research.
i made us music playlists
i was like why not?
we can all listen & vibe to
a nice playlist while job searching.
the minimum daily application
2 quality applications daily.
this is not spray and pray.
three thoughtful, targeted shots.
quality means:
company research done. role requirements mapped to your experience. and sending a cold dm to the hr or hiring manager. (cold dm series starts soon)
if you want to spray and pray, do it. but combine it with 2 quality applications daily.
week 2: velocity
(and the danger zone)
warning: this is when most people crack. initial excitement dies.
rejections pile up. you've been warned. everyone hits this wall. if you’ve hit it don’t worry. the difference is having a plan for when it comes.
when you feel it coming:
cut your min daily quality applications to one application every alternative day. do that break for three days. not forever. just a breather. use the extra time for something energizing. build a small project. connect with people doing interesting work.
watch for these warning signs:
skipping your morning routine, rage applying to random jobs, avoiding your tracker. when you see these signs, pull back.
recovery protocol
one full day off.
no job boards.
no linkedin.
go build something for fun.
come back to your one application minimum. build back to two when ready. i highly suggest forming groups of 3-5 people going through the same thing. share the experience. it keeps you from shouldering the burden alone. how many times have i said this about having a community already? this is exact why growthx exists. people in the community have a median work ex of 9 years and support each other, mentor each other, help with mocks, referrals and a lot more. you can check us out here.
change locations
coffee shop, library, park.
same desk equals depression.
your environment matters WAYYY more than you think. i think environment is 90% of everything you do. choose well.
week 3: iteration
double down on what's working.
cut what isn't.
prep for first interviews.
iterate on your intros
check your tracker
track your response rate weekly.
below 10%? your positioning's off.
above 20%? you're targeting well.
every friday, spot one pattern.
just one thing people.
fix one thing.
progress over perfection
week 4: momentum
keep applications flowing
just because you got interviews doesn’t mean you stop applying. please. if you stop, starting again is equally hard. please please please. maintain momentum on both fronts. do not fucking stop.
coming back from burnout?
start with two 45 minute blocks. build back up slowly. some job seeking folks are holding out on kindness to themselves until they find a job. they think they're not deserving of joy. don’t do this.
practical fixes
install website blockers for social media during your search hours. set the mood right light a candle, play music you like, wear something that makes you feel good
find your people
even if it's a random forum of fellow strugglers. successful job seekers share a pattern. they build rigid structure to fight the chaos. not because they're naturally disciplined. but because without it, you end up watching daytime tv wondering where the month went.
most importantly
they treat the four weeks as sacred. no extensions. no "just one more week." four weeks of focused effort beats six months of random attempts.
the 4 week job search system works
because it has an end date. the structure fights the spiral. the tracking keeps you honest. the community keeps you sane.
you've got your positioning right. you've built proof of work. now build the system that turns preparation into offers.
four weeks from now, you could be negotiating salary instead of refining your resume for the 100th time.
