I struggled to explain my job role to my parents 🥺
Honestly, we all are miserable at it, admit it 😄
Here's a simple approach to explain your job ⬇️
First, let me tell you a personal story ✨
I got out of college and jumped right into a lot of marketing roles (without a formal business degree). For most parts, my dad assumed I am a sales man (imagine shampoo salesmen of the 2010s). To be fair, I think my role also involved in person sales just not of shampoos.
But, the struggle was real 🥲
Marketing as a role was highly co-related to sales in non-internet companies. For the record, my parents have very strong education background (my dad is retired principal of an engineering college) & are technology adopters. But, the problem still persisted. They couldn't relate to how I was explaining "growth/product".
Finding the relatable story 📝
The Idea was simple, I asked my family to open their smartphones, asked them to click on any app that they use.
My next natural question to them 👇🏻
"How did you get to know of this app?", they always had answers - an ad, a friend's recommendation, random Google Search or that video on YouTube. I was making them relate their answers to how marketing works & what I do.
But, then I moved into product building & not just growth.
The explanation has evolved into how WhatsApp was built, how they grew & why everyone in our relatives use WhatsApp.
Is this a water-tight approach? Nopes da.
Does this make life easier? Absolutely.
