A framework to picking the right projects at work.
Simply doing the work is not enough. Here's a framework to move the needle every month π π
Welcome to the 38th edition of the GrowthX Newsletter. Every Tuesday & Thursday I write a piece on startups & business growth. Todayβs piece is going to 94,400+ operators & leaders from startups like Google, Stripe, Swiggy, Razorpay, CRED & more
You work a lot.
You're always busy.
But you donβt shine much.
At least based on your last appraisal.
Sounds familiar?
Hereβs the right framework to be impactful at work & yeah, shine with pride. π
Step 1. Understand
Really ask yourself two important questions.
1. Where is the company going? Whatβs the metric?
2. How does my role impact that metric.
If you canβt figure this one out clearly, you need to sit-down with your manager / founder.
Step 2: Identify
Each company will have the north-star metric. You need to identify how you control specific levers to improve that metric.
If you are into marketing β it could be new customers
if you are into cross sell team β it could be average order value per customer.
Get this identified clearly. Make sure your reporting manager aligns on the levers.
Step 3: Get the impact table
Each lever will have a different level of impact on the north-star metric (low β medium β high).
List down all levers and their possible impact.
Step 4: Be a poker player
Follow the 1% - 2% - 5% method. Will a particular experiment impact the north-star metric by a huge margin?
Put them into 5%. Will it impact medium β put them into 2%, will it make very little impact β put them into 1%.
Step 5: Focus on what matters
Spend 80% of your time making the 5% impact experiments successful.
Remove the noise on 1 & 2%. The idea is to get a big win with 5% changes every month & get a small win with 1 & 2% every 2 weeks.
Step 6: Repeat { Execute, Communicate, Learn }
Ruthlessly execute experiments, communicate with your team & dependent cross teams, learn β share learnings, design the next experiment until the north-star metric moves based on org goals.
UseΒ GrowthX's Standup Sheet to keep track of your work.
Thatβs the framework. π
Document everything that you are executing, it will help you learn better and you will have hundreds of proofs to shine during your appraisal & TBH you will be proud of yourself.
A wise man once said. βPrioritisation is not about what you need to do, itβs about taking hard calls of what you definitely should not do.β
